Concealed Carry Bags - Part 1: Advantages To Off-Body Carry

Despite what you might hear in the media, crime is on the rise. Every day we are hearing about horrific, violent crimes. And sadly, it seems like they are happening closer and closer to home.

In an uncertain world where personal safety is paramount, individuals often find themselves debating the most effective means of self-defense. Among the myriad of options available, carrying a concealed weapon stands out as a reliable method for safeguarding oneself.

However, the debate doesn't end there. The question arises: Is carrying off-body a viable alternative to the traditional on-person concealed carry method? Let's delve into the value and benefits of off-body concealed carry and why it might be the right choice for you.

Understanding Off-Body Concealed Carry:

Off-body concealed carry refers to the practice of carrying a weapon in a bag, purse, briefcase or another type of container rather than directly on the body. While some purists argue for the immediacy of on-person carry, off-body methods offer distinct advantages worth considering.

While I was a police officer, I would typically carry my concealed weapon in an ankle holster. However, now retired living as a civilian in a warm state, I found myself wearing shorts almost year round. Thus, wearing an ankle holster was not an option.

I began to appendix carry for a while, however found that it wasn't exactly "comfortable" while eating or sitting for prolonged periods of time at events. I also found that, unless I was wearing a t-shirt which was two sizes too big, I'd almost always be printing (which means that the outline of my weapon could be seen through my shirt).

Naturally, I didn't feel comfortable letting everyone around me know that I had a gun on me. That kinda defeated the purpose of carrying "concealed." That's when I personally decided to explore off-body carry options.

Benefits of Off-Body Concealed Carry:

  1. Comfort and Convenience: Carrying a concealed weapon off-body can offer superior comfort, especially for individuals who find on-person carry uncomfortable or impractical due to wardrobe choices or physical limitations.

  2. Concealment: Off-body carry allows for concealing larger firearms or multiple weapons without the need for bulky clothing or specialized holsters, offering a discreet option for those who prioritize subtlety.

  3. Accessibility: With the right bag or container, accessing a concealed weapon can be swift and intuitive, potentially allowing for a quicker response in a threatening situation compared to fumbling with traditional on-person holsters.

  4. Versatility: Off-body carry permits individuals to carry not only firearms but also additional self-defense tools such as pepper spray, tasers, or medical supplies, enhancing overall preparedness in various scenarios.

  5. Body Armor Protection: Carrying off-body can provide body armor protection as well when utilizing something like the 221B Tactical PF-1 Bag. This CCW bag also holds two level 3A body armor panels giving you portable body armor protection anywhere you go; malls, movie theaters, church, schools, even airports and air planes.

The Case for Off-Body Concealed Carry:

According to recent statistics, violent crimes continue to pose a significant threat to personal safety in many communities. In 2022, for instance, the United States saw over 1.2 million violent crimes reported, including assaults, robberies, and homicides. While law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to combat such offenses, individuals must also take proactive measures to protect themselves.

Consider the following hypothetical scenarios where having a concealed weapon accessible via off-body carry could potentially save lives:

  1. Parking Lot Predicament: You find yourself walking alone in a dimly lit parking lot when suddenly approached by an assailant demanding your belongings. With your concealed firearm securely stowed in your bag, you can swiftly retrieve it and deter the attacker, ensuring your safety and potentially preventing a robbery or worse.

  2. Home Invasion: In the unfortunate event of a home invasion, having a firearm within reach can mean the difference between life and death. Off-body carry allows you to keep your weapon close even when relaxing at home, offering peace of mind and a decisive advantage against intruders.

  3. Public Threat: In a crowded public space where unforeseen dangers lurk, the ability to discreetly carry a concealed weapon can provide a crucial layer of defense. Whether facing an active shooter or a sudden act of violence, being prepared with off-body carry could enable you to protect yourself and others from harm.

While the debate between off-body and on-person concealed carry methods may persist, it's essential to recognize that both approaches have their merits. Off-body concealed carry offers unique benefits in terms of comfort, concealment, accessibility, and versatility, making it a compelling option for individuals seeking effective self-defense solutions.

In a world where personal safety is non-negotiable, the value of carrying a concealed weapon cannot be overstated. Whether you choose on-body or off-body carry, the most important aspect is being prepared to defend yourself and your loved ones against potential threats in any situation. After all, when it comes to personal safety, it's better to be armed and prepared than to be caught off guard.

In Part 2 I'll discuss some off-body carry options to consider that might make sense for you. Until then, stay safe out there.

Respectfully,

Suresh Madhavan
