A message to those in uniform this holiday season for whom there is no "holiday!"

While working this past Thanksgiving I couldn't help but notice something that I have seen over the last 13 years I've been on the job as a police officer but never really paid much attention to....the parking lots of schools and local businesses around town were COMPLETELY empty!

In fact one of the ONLY parking lots in town that had ANY cars in it at all was the parking lot of police headquarters. I would venture to say that this holds true for most towns across the country!  It's something that I guess I had just become accustomed to over the years.  Not being with my family.  Not getting to see friends and neighbors.  Over the years working nights when the rest of the world is sleeping, working weekends when everyone else is off and home with their friends and families having a bbq or watching the game, and working holidays when you should be in warm surroundings with family and loved ones, has just become....the norm.  And police officers and first responders everywhere do this day in and day out, week after week, month after month, year after years....sometimes for as long as 25-30 years.

Would you be willing to leave your families on nights, weekends and holidays year after year knowing that on any one of these days you may not return home?
